The Mavs played a doubleheader Saturday at the Mav Baseball Complex against Crown Point and Huntington North. In game one, the Mavs were tied 2-2 with the top-ranked Bulldogs heading into the sixth inning. Senior Jonathan Riley evened the score in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run. Crown Point answered in the top half of the sixth with four runs to take control and secure the win. Riley led the offensive effort, finishing with three hits—including a triple and a home run—while driving in two runs. Senior Sammy Swank delivered a strong start on the mound, going five innings while allowing just two hits and two unearned runs. He struck out seven and did not issue a walk. In the nightcap, Huntington North built an early lead with single runs in the first and second innings, then added two more in the fourth to extend their advantage. The Mavs’ best opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases, but the team was able to push across just one run on a sacrifice fly by Spencer Basney. Sophomore Jacoby Kas and senior Mekyel Almond combined for three innings of shutout relief, keeping the Mavs within striking distance late in the game. The Mavs return to action Tuesday as they open Sagamore Conference play with a trip to Lebanon. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
