Offense was at a premium Wednesday night at Raider Field but the Mavs (8-0) did just enough to return to the south side with a 3-1 win. Sammy Swank (2-0) earned the win after working 6.1 innings surrendering four hits and one unearned run while striking out eleven with just one walk. Swank was efficient all night highlighted by 1-2-3 innings in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Jake Winger picked up the save after entering the game with the tying run on first base in the bottom of the seventh. Winger struck out the first batter he faced and then got a line out to centerfielder Logan Marsell for the final out. Riley Sands, Marsell and Winger recorded the only hits on the night but the Mavs put pressure on the Raider defense throughout the contest. After Harrison jumped out to 1-0 lead, the Mavs tied the game in the top of the fifth. With two outs and nobody on, Braxton Leon earned a walk and Sage Adams reached on an error. After a wild pitch advanced Leon and courtesy runner Aiden Earley, Riley Sands reached on an error that allowed Leon to come home. In the top of the seventh, the Mavs broke the tie after pinch-hitter Jonathan Riley and Adams reached on fielder choices that allowed the second and third runs to score. The Mavs return to play Friday night when they host Kankakee Valley at 6:00 pm ET. Be sure to come out early as the senior class of 2024 will be honored prior to the contest.
